#SPINTHIS: Thievery Corporation, Lauryn Hill, James Blunt, Dinah Washington, Green Day

This month we spin tracks from Thievery Corporation, Lauryn Hill, James Blunt, Dinah Washington, and Green Day.

LOVE HAS NO HEART – THIEVERY CORPORATION FEAT. SHANA HALLIGAN

I was delightfully surprised this week when I heard longtime Washington DC collective Thievery Corporation released an album.  I was even more delighted when I gave it a spin. The Temple of I & I dropped back in February to little fanfare. It was released independently on the band’s ESL Music label.

CAN’T TAKE MY EYES OFF OF YOU – LAURYN HILL

Pitchfork posted an article where they looked back at Lauryn Hill’s classic Miseduction of...  I listened to the whole record on repeat. Spun this track a few extra times. Just like I did when it was originally released. Can’t Take my Eyes off of You  has always been my favourite track from this Hip Hop staple.

DON’T GIVE ME THOSE EYES – JAMES BLUNT

I spend a lot of time at Starbucks. I work on this site and our sister site and write other stuff. When working at coffee shops, I need the right music to fit the mood. Most of the time my handy Spoitfy collection can feed my picky musical appetite. A few days ago, the Starbucks soundtrack fed my appetite with a plate of James Blunt’s Don’t Give me Those Eyes. I spent the rest of the day going through his greatest hits. Blunt is good in small doses. On that day, my plate was full.

RIGHT NOW – HAIM

I wrote about this video last summer for my Geeks and Beats feature Have You Heard of…

“Right Now” is a beautiful slower tracks from HAIM. Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, he is known for Boogie Nights and There Will be Blood. “Paul came into the studio as we were trying to figure this one out and he said, ‘I just want to record you.’” revealed Danielle. “So a lot of the stuff we recorded while he was filming us was stuff we used in the final recording of this track.”

DRINKING AGAIN – DINAH WASHINGTON

Because sometimes you just need some soul from 1967. I heard it in an movie a while ago, and the song came back to me one evening while shopping. I ended up playing it over dinner and fit the mood perfectly.

GOOD RIDDANCE (TIME OF YOUR LIFE) – GREEN DAY

I moved from Newmarket to London, Ontario on November 10th. Lived in the York Region area of Toronto for more than two decades. In a Facebook post I thanked the friends that were there for me and dedicated this track to them.
