Celebrities Lash out at Trump on the Elephant in the Room

The Trump administration’s move to reverse a band on elephant trophies has sparked strong reactions on social media, including from celebrates invested in preservation.

Elephants are officially an endangered species

It likely will be overturned. The ban on hunters bringing trophies of elephants they killed in Zimbabwe and Zimbia. A reversed rule set by the Barack Obama administration in 2014.

Elephants are officially an endangered species, but the government of these countries allow hunting if there is evidence it helps conservation of the spices. An U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service official said the Trump administration has found new evidence that the emerged to support reversing the ban. Elephant populations have declined 6% in Zimbabwe since 2001, according to the Great Elephant Census study published in 2016.

Infuriating

One stat that is sparking up a lot of outrage on social media on the overturned ban. Ellen DeGeneres spoke out against the move by the administration, starting a #BeKindtoElephants hashtag.

“Basically by lifting this ban, he is encouraging Americans to kill elephants,” Degeneres said. “Elephants show compassion, sympathy, social intelligence, self-awareness, they’re excellent at learning abilities — all the things I have yet to see in this president.”

Chelsea Clinton tweeted a link to a Humane Society condemnation for the move, calling the lifting of the band “infuriating”.
