Introducing #SPINTHIS. A new feature where I will run down random tracks that I’ve been listening to. My musical taste is all over the place and in a given week, my taste buds can crave everything under the moon. I try to keep a note of what I’ve been craving but it’s so constant, I tend to lose track. This is good way to show how my musical buds vary.
ON HOLD – THE XX
I remembered how much I loved this beat the first time I heard it. Earlier this week, I needed to pack for the big move in a couple weeks, and this track came to mind. After I played it, I played it again. Then I played their whole album. Hold On is from The XX’s release, I See You.
APRON STRINGS – EVERYTHING BUT THE GIRL
I came back from Muskoka this week. I was up there for over a month. While there, I would listen to about a dozen artists regularly. During my quiet tome, I would listen to EBTG lead, Tracey Thorn. Her calming, eclectic voice brought even more calm in the sometimes wild waters up north. Since I returned, I’ve been pressing rewind on Apron Strings the most.
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE LET ME GET WHAT I WANT – THE SMITHS
Sometimes a down day just needs the reassuring poetry of Morrissey. Not much of a story here. Pretty in Pink is one of my favourite soundtracks from the 80s. This Smiths track is my favourite track from the soundtrack. Don’t think too much. Just press play.
NOT IN LOVE – CRYSTAL CASTLES FEAT. ROBERT SMITH
We have to credit Spotify for this one. I was walking home from a Main Street bar the other night, and this groovy tune from Crystal Castles magically appeared. And yes, that’s the voice of the lead of The Cure, Robert Smith. I didn’t even know they teamed up. I didn’t even know I had this track on my playlist. (And yes, it was cold out that night – Spotify knows these things)
WE CALLED IT LOVE – STARS
For me, We Called it Love is the breakout track from Stars’ latest release, There is No Love in Florescent Light. I’ve been listening to this album every since getting it the day it dropped. I was in my room in Muskoka. It was just starting to rain and the pitter-patter of the drizzle hitting the roof outside my window went perfectly with this whole album. Quiet night with a great album and nature.
AIN’T THAT A SHAME – FATS DOMINO
We lost Fats Domino this week. The first song that came to mind wasn’t Blueberry Hill. It was this. Dad taught me a lot about music on our road trips to the states. One of his favourite artists to talk about and to sing along with was Fats. He knew every one of his songs. Especially this one. The only problem was that instead of singing it properly he would – “by accident” – make the mistake of singing Ain’t That a Shane instead of Ain’t That a Shame…You now know why I hate the word Shame.
